Former World No 1 Amateur and 2007 Walker Cup player, Jamie is one of the most exciting young golfers in the world.
Jamie’s potential was recognised at an early age when The Suffolk Golf Union selected him for their U14 team and one of his early ambitions was realised before his 16th birthday when he became a Scratch Golfer. He was first selected to play for England at 15 and has represented every age group since then.
In 2003 he moved up to play in men’s competitions and took the transition in his stride. He was immediately included in the English Golf Union’s (EGU) men’s ‘A’ squad and in 2004 he was promoted to the Elite squad.
Jamie’s England career really took off in 2005 and he became one of the automatic selections for all the major strokeplay and matchplay competitions. He was runner up in the West of England Championship and the St Andrews Links Trophy and he was selected to play in the European Men’s Team Championship, where he helped England win the tournament, and the Home Internationals.
Having established himself in the England set up Jamie really made an impression on the world amateur stage in 2006 with wins in the Lytham Trophy, the Selbourne Salver and The St Georges Grand Challenge. The season culminated with his inclusion in the Great Britain and Ireland team that beat the Continent of Europe to lift the St Andrews Trophy in the Czech Republic.
In 2007 Jamie achieved the last of his ambitions as an amateur. He won the English Strokeplay Championship (the Brabazon Trophy) and spent a record 16 weeks at number 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, a feat that cemented his selection for the 2007 Walker Cup Team.
His England record stands up against the best golfers this country has produced. From 31 matches he has won 21, halved 2 and lost just 8, a better record than Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Justin Rose.
Jamie’s strengths are his consistency and temperament, something that has held him in good stead throughout his golfing career thus far.
Having achieved all his goals in amateur golf Jamie turned professional in September 2007 and now aims to do the same in the professional ranks. Finishing an impressive tied 6th at the Russian Open in 2008 and 4th at the Columbia Masters in 2009, proved he’s definitely one to watch.
