Double World Champion in the Men’s Coxless Four and Olympic Silver medallist in the Men’s 8.
Alex started rowing at Monkton Combe School in 1996 and was quickly spotted as a potential world rower and selected for the National Junior Team.
He continued to excel at Oxford Brookes University progressing from the juniors to the National U23 squad. Then in 2004 he surprised everyone by winning the GB National Team Trials and as a result was selected into the GB rowing team’s lead boat, a coxless four, with Sir Matthew Pinsent, James Cracknell OBE and Steve Williams MBE.
Alex had an exciting season in 2004 winning gold in Poznan and bronze in Lucerne. However, two months after Olympic selection he suffered a bilateral collapsed lung and his dream to race in Athens was over.
All the crew felt Alex brought them a new lease of life and he made such a huge impact on them that they named their boat for Athens ‘Alex Partridge’ so that he would cross the line first!
Sir Matthew Pinsent also paid him an incredible tribute by concluding his autobiography with a letter Alex had penned for the crew before they left for the Games.
Alex regained full fitness by the beginning of 2005 and following an unbeaten season he defended his World Championship title at Dorney Lake, Windsor in August 2006 to become double World Champion. In 2008 Alex moved to the Men’s 8 and at the Olympic Games in Beijing he won Silver as their powerful finish was unfortunately not enough to overtake the Canadians. The focus is now on London 2012 where Alex hopes to this time win Gold.
Alex is a huge sports fan with particular interest in surfing, golf, cycling and skiing
