Caitlin is one of great British medal prospects for the London Games in 2012.
In her early teens Caitlin swam and ran at county level, but she opted for the pool when she grew to dislike ‘running up hills in the cold’. She was recruited to the Scottish Youth Squad when she was 14 and three years later at the age of 17 qualified for the British Youth Squad.
The McClatchey genes certainly possess a powerful kick. Both of Caitlin’s parents competed in the pool for Scotland. Father John swam for his country in the 1970 Commonwealth Games, whilst her mother Louise raced for Scotland in the 200m butterfly at the 1974 Games in Christchurch.
In 2004 at 18 years of age Caitlin thought she was going to spend her summer recovering from the stress of her A-Levels until an inspired swim in the 200m freestyle final at the British trials catapulted her into the reckoning to represent Team GB at the Athens Olympic Games in the 4×200m relay. The team put in an excellent performance to come 5th.
The following year Caitlin was one of only three British medalists at the World Swimming Championships, winning a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle.
Caitlin then followed in her parents footsteps when she was selected to represent Scotland at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne where she won Gold in both the 200m and 400m freestyle. Later that year she won a Bronze in the European Championships despite suffering from illness earlier the same week.
At the Beijing Olympics Caitlin made the final in both of the events she competed in, finishing 6th in the 200m freestyle and 7th in the 4×100m freestyle relay.
Caitlin is now looking forward to her third Olympics in London 2012 where she will be more determined than ever to make it onto the podium.
