Record breaking swimmers star in World Cup

On the opening day of the FINA World Cup in Stockholm, Lizzie Simmonds won Gold in the 200m backstroke in 2:02.01 to beat Australian Belinda Hocking by over a second, setting a new European record in the process.

Fran Halsall set a British record of 23.96 seconds in the women’s 50m freestyle.

On day 2 Fran went into the final of the 100m freestyle with confidence and her performance did not disappoint as she stormed to the gold medal in a European and World Cup record time.  Fran led throughout the race and touched home in a time of 51.61sec.

Lizzie won her second medal of the World Cup in the 100m backstroke,  joint silver in a British record time of 56.92 alongside Japan’s Aya Terakawa.

Fran concluded her World Cup campaign in the 100m individual medley and put in a strong performance in her heat as she broke the British record.  She won the bronze medal in a time of 58.81 to lower the British record further.
