James Morrison
James Morrison is a highly talented and ambitious young golfer quickly becoming one of the brightest prospects to emerge in British Golf.
James grew up playing cricket and hockey and spent most of his time at the crease of national and county cricket grounds. From the age of 8 to 16 he captained his prep school and secondary school 1st XI and played for both Surrey and England.
At age 16 James found golf. He joined St George’s Hill Golf Club in Weybridge with a handicap of 28 and within a year he had reduced this to scratch! His progress soon caught the attention of his county selectors and following a course record at the Chobham Junior Open, a club Championship win at St Georges Hill and a last 16 in the British Boys he was selected to play for his county.
James’s game went from strength to strength with more and more wins on the junior circuit but he started to turn his attention away from cricket and more to the high profile national golf championships. He became a regular for the Surrey Boys and then in 2002 following much success playing for his county, James was selected for the English Golf Union’s coaching scheme. Later in that year following some good results he was awarded a scholarship to the University of South Carolina.
A year in the US gave James the experience he needed to step up to the bigger stage. On returning he had his best season to date winning the Victorian Amateur Championship in Australia, reaching the semi finals of the English Amateur and placing 4thin the Finnish Amateur. A successful 2006 followed claiming 3 titles, 4 course records and the biggest win of his career in Italy at the Italian Amateur Championships and Nations Cup.
In September 2006 James felt it was the right time to turn professional and try European Tour School. He cruised through the first 2 stages with an impressive 2ndplace finish at 1stStage in France. At the Final Qualifying stage he was unlucky to miss the cut by 1 shot but this still gave him a 2007 Challenge Tour ranking. At Asian Tour School he came even closer getting through 1ststage comfortably and then coming within 1 shot of a 2007 card.
James’s goal over the next 12 months are to play well enough to secure a 2008 European Tour Card. He has come a long way over the past few months and his time will come. He has a great attitude and has been well coached both physically and mentally. Watch this space…
