Kyle Phillips

Kyle Phillips is the only golf architect alive to have a Top-10* rated golf course in the UK & Ireland with his Kingsbarns design. This is no mean feat when you consider the others in the list and their role in the history of the great game.

Today Kyle is widely regarded as the leading golf architect of his generation. A Landscape Architecture graduate from Kansas State, Kyle managed to gain a junior designer role with Trent Jones upon graduation – which allowed him to focus on his passion for golf and ignore his parents pleas to go to Law School. Since then Kyle has worked in more than 20 countries, on behalf of over 60 clients. His reputation for developing creative design solutions is second to none.

A member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA), Kyle has design experience in locations such as Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Europe, North America and South America. Whilst he is American by birth, his soul is Scottish. He is firmly against what he calls “The Mcdonalds-isation” of golf: “The American recipe for golf design today is so predictable and commercial…flat fairways, perimeter weighted mounds on both sides of the fairways, large artificial water features, visible concrete buggy cart paths, lots of maintenance, etc., etc.  The game was conceived in Scotland to play naturally over irregular landforms. I seek to keep alive that spirit through my designs”.

With rave reviews for courses such as The Grove, Dundonald and Kingsbarns, Kyle regards his best years as being ahead of him: “Hey, I’m not even 50 yet…! Trent Jones did not become known as ‘The Open Doctor’ until he was in his 60’s, so in that sense I am hopefully still on the front 9”/
