Paul Waring
Paul Waring is one of the brightest young prospects in British Golf.
Paul started playing golf at his local municipal club when he was 9 with a handicap of 29 and he was immediately hooked by the sport.
By the age of thirteen his handicap was down to 4 and he was catching the attention of the county selectors who picked him to play his first game for the Cheshire U18 team at only fourteen. In the same year, he won the Junior Open at Bromborough Golf Club with an impressive gross 2 under par score of 70 and was subsequently invited to become a member of the club and has played there ever since.
In 2001, following so much success playing for his county, Paul was selected into the English Golf Union’s coaching scheme. Later that year he earned his first England Boys cap in an U16 match against Italy and then only a few months later he won the prestigious McGregor Trophy.
In 2002 he finished 4th at the World U18 Championships and 3rd in the Peter McEvoy Trophy. His excellent form continued in 2003 coming 2nd at the European U18 Championships and he captained England at the U18 Home Internationals and the GB&I team in a match against Europe.
In 2004 Paul was selected on to the England Men’s Elite squad and he remained part of the squad for 3 years. Although 2005 was a tough year due to niggling injuries, he hit a rich vein of form late in the season to win the English Amateur Championship.
Starting the 2007 season free of injuries Paul had some good performances for England then in July he proved his game was back to it’s best by qualifying for the Open Championship ahead of numerous seasoned pro’s. Paul’s Open experience proved that he can certainly compete at the highest level so he turned professional in August.
Towards the end of 2007 Paul received six invitations to play on the European Challenge Tour and made the cut in 5. In only his second professional event a second round score of 62 meant he lead the tournament for three days but just lost out in a playoff to finish runner-up.
In November last year, Paul successfully earned his European Tour card at the first attempt through European Tour Qualifying School, finishing in the Top 30 from 156 entrants over 6 rounds. At the South African Airways Open, his first European Tour event, Paul battled against tricky weather conditions to make the cut, finishing a respectable T41. Paul’s good form continued into the Joburg Open, having been tied leader during the 3rd round he finished an outstanding T9, a promising start to the 2008 season.
